Why is Gianluigi Buffon being sold?

The sale of Juventus star Gianluigio Buffon to Manchester United could be a coup for United, with the Italian star reportedly being offered £50 million for the Serie A title.

The sale of Buffon, who is the leading goalscorer for Juventus, to Manchester could be the final straw for United.

The Premier League champions are also said to be keen on signing former Barcelona and AC Milan star Angel Di Maria, who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

A number of big names, including former Barcelona striker Neymar and Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery, have been linked to the Old Trafford club, with former Manchester United player Eric Cantona being one of the biggest names to have already been linked.

United have a strong squad of international players, with Louis van Gaal set to name a squad that includes the likes of Juan Mata, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Matteo Darmian, who have been heavily linked with the Old Firm.

The United boss has also made a number of changes to the squad for this season, including the signing of Ryan Giggs from Manchester United, while United have also brought in several new players, including Romelu Lukaku, who was linked with Juventus earlier this summer.

United are currently in ninth place in the Premier League table, three points behind leaders Chelsea.

The transfer of Buffongi would be the first significant overhaul to United’s squad in four years.

Juventus have struggled for form in recent years, losing all seven of their Serie A games this term, and have dropped to 14th in Serie A, five points behind Juventus in fourth place.

Juve fans are known to be angry with Buffon for not paying his wages, and United could well face similar anger should they be sold, especially if the transfer is a success.
